SAVITRI

Savitri - Sri Aurobindo
Savitri – Sri Aurobindo

In Savitri, Sri Aurobindo says, “IT WAS THE HOUR BEFORE THE GODS AWAKE.”

This is the first line from the book “Savitri” by SRI AUROBINDO.

I heard many people saying about this marvellous legend, and there are so many researches and reviews that were carried out and are still being carried out to find out its true meaning and utilisation.

This is a yogic book we can say, which has numerous details on and about the transfiguration of MAN to THE SUPRAMENTAL BEINGS, the next Divine stage of the Evolutionary Process.

Sri Aurobindo is an Indian philosopher, a yogi who not only dreamt of the “Supramental Consciousness” on this earth but manifested it.

This epic, SAVITRI, is one of his marvels. It is not imaginary; the book is all about His Yogic experiences and contains 23,814 lines, and Sri Aurobindo has worked for nearly 50 years on this legend.

The first versions of Savitri date back to 1899, and it is not just a mere personification of allegory.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO SAVITRI

This treasure has nearly three parts; 12 books.

This epic poem is based on the story recited in Mahabharatham, the tale of Satyavan and Savitri, a conjugal love conquering death.

Satyavan

Satyavan is the soul carrying the Divine truth that descends into death’s grip, ignorance.

Savitri

Savitri, daughter of the Sun; Supreme who comes down to save Satyavan.

She is the divine force, Shakthi, consciousness, and truth that saves us from ignorance.

She descends to this earth to save and transfigure from ignorance to the ultimate truth and mortal beings to immortal life.

Aswapati

Aswapati is the human- father of Savitri, the lord of Horse, the lord of Tapasya, the concentrated energy of spiritual endeavour.

Dyumatsena

Dyumatsena, father of Satyavan, the Divine mind here fallen into ignorance and blindness, losing its celestial Kingdoms of vision.

In this book, Savitri, SRI AUROBINDO, explains his yogic experience through the yoga of king Aswapati. 23,814 lines contain the details of yoga. Each line has the highest mantric rhythm.

savitri - Sri AurobindoBOOK 1. THE BOOK OF BEGINNINGS

It has five cantos,

THE SYMBOL DAWN

THE ISSUE

THE YOGA OF THE KING: THE YOGA OF THE SOUL’S RELEASE

THE SECRET KNOWLEDGE

THE YOGA OF THE KING: THE YOGA OF THE SPIRIT’S FREEDOM AND GREATNESS

In Savitri, Sri Aurobindo says, “IT WAS THE HOUR BEFORE THE GODS AWAKE.”

This line can be understood in many ways,

Time or hours before dawn, we see that “G” is capitalised, indicating the Divinity. (We can see throughout this book that things/characters associated with divine qualities are capitalised).

Another meaning is our unconscious state, the non-awakened state (ignorant phase)—the time before waking up to our souls.

Ignorant phase in which we cannot feel/ or even know that we are not our mind, not our body, but the DIVINE SOUL. He has mentioned this as (GOD’S AWAKE. GOD – OUR SOUL).

The book begins with consciousness. Let us see the brief account of each canto in upcoming blogs.
