WHAT IS MOXIBUSTION?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy or treatment that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to endorse healing with Acupuncture.

As with most methods of traditional Chinese medicine, the purpose of moxibustion is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and sustain overall health.

Moxibustion is used on individuals who have a cold or cough condition. The practice drives out cold and warms the meridians, which leads to an even flow of qi and blood.

In Western medicine, moxibustion has been exercised to spin breech babies into a normal head-down position before childbirth.

HOW DOES MOXIBUSTION IN ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

There are two kinds of moxibustion: Direct Moxibustion and Indirect Moxibustion.

In the Direct Moxibustion method, a small, cone-shaped amount of moxa stick is placed on top of an acupuncture point and burned.

Further, Direct Moxibustion can be broke down into scarring moxibustion or non-scarring moxibustion.

In Scarring Moxibustion, the moxa stick burns on the acupuncture point until it does out completely.

In Non-Scarring Moxibustion, the moxa stick is placed on the point and lit but is extinguished before the skin gets burned.

Patients feel an agreeable heating sensation penetrating deep into the skin but should not suffer any pain or blistering unless the moxa stick is left in place for too long.

The more common form of Moxibustion is the Indirect Moxibustion type because it comes with a lower risk for pain or burns.

In an Indirect Moxibustion procedure, an acupuncture practitioner lights one end of a moxa stick and holds it close to the treatment zone for a few minutes until the Zone turns red.

Another method of Indirect Moxibustion uses both acupuncture needles and moxa stick.

A needle is inserted into an acupoint and retained. The tip of the needle is then wrapped in moxa and ignited, which creates heat in the point and the surrounding area.

Once the person experiences relief, the moxa is extinguished, and the needle is taken out.

So, in this way, Acupuncture Moxibustion helps treat the patients, and it is one of the best indirect methods of moxibustion.
