HISTORY OF MOXIBUSTION
Moxibustion is a vital invention of the Chinese nation. The literature records on moxibustion can be traced back to the Warring States Period (475 B.C. to 221 B.C.).
Since the 1950s, the treatment scope of moxibustion has been expanded.
The therapeutic methods of moxibustion are becoming increasingly rich and varied, and significant research on the mechanism of moxibustion has been made.
MECHANISM OF MOXIBUSTION
The warm-heat effect of moxibustion has a proximate relation to the warm receptors (W.R.s).
Moxibustion can leash to vasoconstriction at the burning point, while vasodilatation around the point boosts peripheral arterial blood flow and microvascular permeability.
Additional thermal effect of moxibustion is to stimulate Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs) in local tissues.
HSPs are a group of functionally related proteins intricate in the folding and unfolding of more proteins.
As an endogenous protective process, HSPs can be produced in cells in response to hyperthermia and other ecological stresses.
The HSPs induced by moxibustion may be an important factor of its mechanism of action Combustion product of moxa is smoke.
The smoke of moxa contains various complex components. Its volatile ingredients are ammonia, alcohols (Ethylene glycol, Pentyl butanol), aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, terpene compounds and their oxides forth.
The smoke of moxa can be used in air disinfection and as antiviral and antifungal.
HOW IT WORKS
The warmth that moxibustion produces releases along a precise pathway (usually equivalent to the jing luo channel being cured) away from the application site.
This is an effective result, as it indicates the entrance of the Qi and signals that the movement of Qi and xue has been released in the channel.
APPLICATIONS
Pain due to arthritis or injury, especially in ” coldness ” patterns where the pain innately feels better with heat application.
Digestive Problems and irregular elimination Gynaecological and obstetrical conditions, including breech presentation in late-term pregnancy, can also be done.
This therapy is excellent against cold and flu. ↵
