WHAT IS MOXIBUSTION?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy and treatment that consists of burning dried mugwort on particular points of the body.

Moxibustion is an essential invention of the Chinese nation. Since the 1950s, the treatment scope of moxibustion has been expanded.

The therapeutic methods of moxibustion are becoming increasingly affluent and varied, and significant research on the mechanism of moxibustion has been made.

THE MECHANISM OF MOXIBUSTION

The warm-heat effect of moxibustion has an immediate relation to the warm receptors (WRs).

Moxibustion can lead to Vasoconstriction at the burning point while vasodilatation around the point and Rise Peripheral Arterial Blood Flow and Microvascular Permeability.

Another thermal effect of moxibustion is to stimulate Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs) in local tissues.

HSPs are a class of functionally related proteins involved in the folding and unfolding of other proteins.

As an endogenous protective process, HSPs can be synthesised in cells in response to hyperthermia and other environmental stresses.

The HSPs induced by moxibustion may be an essential factor in its mechanism of action. The combustion product of moxa is smoke.

The smoke of moxa contains various complex components, and its volatile ingredients are ammonia, alcohols (ethylene glycol, pentyl butanol), aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, terpene compounds and their oxides, and so forth.

The smoke of moxa can be used in Air Disinfection and as Antiviral and Antifungal.

SALT MOXIBUSTION

Moxibustion on salt is frequently used indirect moxibustion in clinical practice; it involves filling the umbilical fossa with clean and dry salt and applying big moxa sticks for treatment.

PROCEDURE OF SALT MOXIBUSTION

The patient should lie down and should expose his/her umbilical region.

REN 8 - ACU POINTSome amount of stir-fried clean and dry white salt should be filled in the umbilical region.

After that, place moxa cones on the salt, ignite the moxa, remove the old cone, and place a new one when the patient feels slightly hot.

3 – 9 moxa sticks can be used for each treatment. For acute disease, more than nine moxa cones are used.
