Digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome, is a group of eye and vision problems linked to long periods of screen use. It is common among people who work on computers, phones and tablets for hours each day. The symptoms are usually temporary, but they can be uncomfortable and affect work and sleep.

Common symptoms

  • Tired, dry or itchy eyes
  • Headaches, especially around the forehead or temples
  • Blurred vision that clears after a short rest
  • Neck and shoulder pain from holding the head forward

Why screens tire your eyes

When you look at a screen, you blink less often, so the eye surface dries out. Close, fixed focus also strains the focusing muscles. Glare, poor lighting and a screen placed too high or too far away add to the problem.

The 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. This relaxes the focusing muscles and gives your eyes a break from close work. Set a timer if it helps.

Simple changes that help

  1. Set the screen slightly below eye level, about an arm’s length away.
  2. Reduce glare by placing the screen away from windows and using softer lighting.
  3. Blink on purpose. Full blinks help keep the eye surface moist.
  4. Adjust brightness and text size so the screen matches the room.
  5. Use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry, after checking with a pharmacist or doctor.

When to see an eye doctor

See an eye care professional if symptoms continue after rest, if your vision changes, or if you have pain, flashes or sudden loss of vision. These can signal problems that need a proper examination.

Frequently asked questions

Do blue light glasses prevent eye strain?

The evidence that they reduce eye strain is limited. Breaks, posture, lighting and blinking have stronger support.

Does screen use damage the eyes permanently?

Digital eye strain is usually temporary. Long-term eye health depends on regular eye checks and general health, not screen use alone.
