Losing a phone is bad. Losing the photos, contacts and messages on it is worse. A backup takes a few minutes to set up and runs on its own after that. Here is how to back up an Android phone and an iPhone, plus what to check before you switch to a new phone.
Back up an Android phone with Google
- Open Settings, then Google, then Backup.
- Turn on “Back up to Google Drive” or “Google One backup”.
- Tap “Back up now” to run the first backup.
- Check that contacts, calendar, photos and app data are included.
Photos and videos are backed up through Google Photos. Open Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then “Photos settings”, then “Backup”, and turn it on. Choose “Storage saver” or “Original quality” depending on your storage plan.
Back up an iPhone with iCloud
- Open Settings, then tap your name at the top, then iCloud.
- Tap “iCloud Backup” and turn it on.
- Tap “Back Up Now” to run the first backup.
Make sure you have enough iCloud storage. The free 5 GB fills quickly once photos are included. You can manage what gets backed up under “Manage Storage” and “Backups”.
Back up an iPhone or Android to a computer
A local backup protects you even if your cloud account is locked or hacked.
- iPhone: connect to a Mac or Windows PC, open Finder or iTunes, select the device, and choose “Back up now”. Tick “Encrypt local backup” if you want passwords and health data saved.
- Android: connect by USB and copy photos, videos and documents to the computer. Some manufacturers offer a desktop backup tool.
What to back up before switching phones
- Contacts and calendar (usually synced to Google or iCloud).
- Photos and videos.
- WhatsApp chats, which need a separate backup in the app settings.
- Authenticator apps, which often do not transfer automatically. Save their recovery codes.
- Banking and UPI apps, which need to be re-registered on the new phone.
- Saved passwords, if not already in a password manager.
How to check your backup worked
On Android, check Settings, then Google, then Backup for the last backup time. On iPhone, check Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup. Do a test restore on a spare device if you can, or at least confirm the backup size looks right.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I back up my phone?
Automatic daily backups are best. If you take many photos or change settings often, check that backups are running weekly.
Does backing up my phone save my apps?
It saves app data and settings, but the apps themselves are re-downloaded from the store. Some apps, like banking apps, must be set up again.
Is cloud backup safe?
It is safe for most people, but use a strong account password and turn on two-factor authentication. For sensitive data, keep an encrypted local backup too.
